2024 #8: Sept 27
Haha whats’s up! It’s been a minute - feels like I got sucked into a wormhole and spit out the other end, but I’m back. I had a wild summer of touring (one playing bass with Sinai Vessel, one playing drums with Soft Surface), recording, mixing, and a lil hanging out too.
Writing to you from the road - on tour with Patter right now, and you can check our dates out here.
Music stuff
Live:
Patter’s currently on the road, going out to the East Coast and then doing a couple of dates in Canada, ending with a ripper just outside of Detroit and finally playing back home in Chicago 10/5 at DIY spot The Attic. All pertinent information can be found here. We made a pretty cool flyer too.
Releases:
Since I last wrote, two new Options songs have been released - The Opening and Time’s Up. Got a show to announce in a few weeks, and will send out an email— will be a very special one.
Two excellent new Dust Star tunes which I mixed, are out. The mix was done mostly using analog outboard gear at Ohmstead, and I’m really happy with how they turned out. Killer mastering as always by Amar Lal at Macro in Oakland, CA.
My bud Cameron Wisch (Dust Star, Frankie Cosmos, Porches, etc) released the first tune from his new project Soft Surface, which I helped him mix and master in the car on the way to the project’s first live gig. Cameron rocks, this song is great, and keep your eye out for more music!
The first two tunes from Red PK have dropped, which I mastered. Red PK is the music of Andy Krull — a dear friend, a treasured collaborator, and one of my favorite songwriters in Chicago. Listen in!

Recording:
I will be embarking on my first Recording Tour in December, going out to the East Coast (specifically, Boston area and Philly). If you’re interested in working with me, now is the time to get in touch! If you have access to a warehouse, church, barn, or other nontraditional space, I can bring my rig to you. Email me for more info at sethengel.musicguy@gmail.com
Here’s a list of equipment I’m going to be bringing
Non-music stuff
I’ve been cold-brewing iced tea on tour - highly recommended whether on the road or not! I got a mesh strainer from masonjarlifestyle.com and a 2.5 cup wide-mouth mason jar (they’re kind of hard to find but I love this size).
I add about 6tsp of loose leaf tea, fill the mason jar up, let it sit for an hour or two (depending on how strong I want the brew to be), and then put it in the fridge to slow the steeping. Take it out in the morning and enjoy some cold & fresh iced tea!
One of my favorite teas is Guayusa, and that’s what I brought on this current tour. This method’s also turned out really nicely with Yerba Mate and Yaupon as well.
Also have been into brewing “japanese style coffee” method via Aeropress, and realized I can do the same thing with tea. About 6 ice cubes in my 2.5 cup mason jar, 6tsp of tea, and brew basically the same as one would with coffee in the Aeropress, using the inverted method.
If you have any fun methods you’ve been enjoying for brewing tea or coffee, give me a shout, especially if the result is a cold, caffeinated beverage.
Alright, more soon, and thank you for signing up for the newsletter!
